With Bill Gerry leading the way,
the Virginia Cavayearlings defeated
the Baby Terps of Maryland,
91-82, last night in an impressive
offensive display.

Entering the game averaging
19.2 points per game, the 6′ 7″
center from Brooklyn, N.Y. scored
a season high of 35 points, netting
20 in the first half and 15 more in
the second. Equally impressive on
the boards, he had 14 rebounds in
the first half alone.

The Cavayearlings forged ahead
of the Baby Terps early in the
game, 33-18, with Gerry scoring
16 of the 33 points. With 2:08
remaining in the first half, the
Maryland Frosh closed to within
nine points of the Cavayearlings,
only to have two more baskets
by Gerry widen the gap at
by Gerry widen the gap to the
halftime score of 49-36.

The second half was much the
same story, with the Cavayearling
quintet opening up an 18 point
bulge on three occasions. Foul
trouble slowed down the scoring
pace somewhat for the Cavayearlings,
but the continued stellar performance
by Gerry, aided by the
slick passing of guard Kevin Kennelly,
kept the Baby Terps from
getting closer than six points at
any one time.

Besides Gerry, pacing the attack
for the Cavayearlings were Kevin
Kennelly, who turned in his usual
fine performance, with 17 points,
and Bill Fulton, who netted 15
before being taken out of the game
due to foul trouble.

Pacing the Maryland attack, was
Tom Worthington with 26 points,
20 of which came in the second
half. Don Martin, the usually high-scoring
Baby Terp was held to only
11 points.

The victory, which was the sixth
on the season for the Cavayearlings
against nine defeats, closes out
their season and avenges an earlier
defeat.
