Three More Schoolboy Athletes
Sign To Perform On Gridiron
For Cavalier Teams Of Future
To follow up the three Texas
football players signed last week
to grants-in-aid, the Athletic Department
has announced the recent
signing of another trio of outstanding
high school prospects.
In the matter of the first Coach
Don Lawrence played an instrumental
role in attracting Pittsburghers
James Lacey to the University.
Lacey stands 5′ 11″ and
weighs 170 pounds. A star halfback
both on offense and defense
for South Hills High School, Lacey
has also lettered in track.
As a member of the All-Catholic
League team and the league's most
valuable player as well, the Pennsylvanian
has been nominated to
play in the Big 33 game, which
features stars from around the
state.
He plans to enter the College.
In search of bulk Coach Wilson
has signed a huge guard from Gates
City High School in Gates City,
Virginia. Short in height but somewhat
heavy, Gilbert Smith
stretches only to 5′ 11″, but weighs
225 pounds. An all-conference
selection as middle guard on defense
and as left guard on offense,
Smith also made the All-State
team this past fall.
Coach Wilson is especially impressed
with Smith's speed in pulling
from the line to lead on sweep
blocking. He also looks aggressive
on defense, and could play either
way for Virginia. In his high school
career, Smith lettered for four years
in football and also won recognition
in track and baseball.
The third boy to sign a grant-in-aid
is Bill Boykin from Norfolk
Academy in Norfolk, Virginia.
Boykin is a 6′ 2″ end currently
weighing 204 pounds.
Coach Ned McDonald, who
signed the Virginian, expressed
pride in the boy's "ability to
catch the ball in a crowd." He
has the speed to play split end and
the size to perform as tight end.
Boykin will enroll in the College
of Arts and Sciences.
