Ex-Wahoo Stars Help Recruit
Three Texas Football Players

Bob Davis and Ed Carrington
are gone. But although they will
never again perform in Scott
Stadium, they continue to make
efforts to help the Wahoos in contests
to come. Most recently they
were instrumental in the signing of
three Houston football stars sought
after by the likes of Texas, Oklahoma,
and Illinois.

Carrington is a Houston native,
and Davis is now the back-up
quarterback for the Houston
Oilers. So it was natural that
Coach George Blackburn would
call on the pair to assist in convincing
Hal Trentham, Robbi
Gustafson, and Gib Walton to
come to Virginia.

Trentham is a 6′ 3″ 200 pounder
from Houston's Kinkaid High. He
played four sports in high school,
and his greatest asset is speed.
He has been timed in a startling
9.9 for the 100. Trentham was so
highly regarded that the University
of Houston offered him his choice
of football or basketball grants.
His size and speed mark him as
a boy who could fill any number
of positions for the Cavaliers in
the future.

Second of the Texas trio is
Robbi Gustafson from Memorial
High School. Standing six feet
even and weighing in at 185
pounds, Gustafson's forte is defense
although he was a second
team selection as a quarterback
on the all-city squad. As a defensive
halfback he attained first
team honors. Gustafson chose Virginia
over 26 other schools.

Lastly, the Texas foray netted
offensive guard Gib Walton. In
the Texas tradition, Walton covers
the 100 in 10.7 seconds despite
his 215 pounds. An all-conference
selection, Walton plans to study
law at the University. If any of
these boys can play up to the
standards of the pair who signed
them, they should be thrilling Cavalier
fans many times in the future.
