Undefeated Swimmers
Attempt Eighth Straight

By Ted McKean
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Blacksburg will be the scene
for Coach Ralph Law's Cavalier
swimmers as they attempt to stretch
their impressive string of wins to
eight, against a powerful VPI
squad Saturday.

After two home triumphs over
VMI and Duke, the prospect of an
undefeated season has emerged
as a distinct reality. Only the
Hokies, and a perennially omnipotent
Maryland team who oppose
the Cavaliers Monday, stand in
the way of the Virginia objective.

Tech has a strong team which
should amply challenge the gentlemen
from the University. Their
margin of victory over Duke closely
approximated the Cavaliers'
61-43 triumph over the Blue Devils.

Co-captain and school record
holder in four events, Jack Wilson
will once again lead the Cavaliers,
along with fellow Captain Terry
Gromel. At this time, Wilson currently
holds the school marks in
the 200 backstroke, 200 individual
medley, 50 free, and 200 free, as
well as being a member of both
record setting relays. Gromel is
co-holder of the 50 record along
with Wilson, and also a member
of the record setting relays.

In Coach Law's supporting east
of performers are also a number
of record holders. Phil Ronniger
leads the way in the sprints, by
merit of his 51.5 school standard
in the 100 free. He is ably backed
up by Nelson Workman, Co-captain
of last year's first-year squad.

Brian Fuller, record performer
in the 200 breast, and Jim Sonneborn
capably handle the breast-stroke
duties. In diving, the trio
of Ken Bishop, Jim Busch, and
Jay Wainwright have constantly
provided the Cavaliers with winning
points.

Law has also depended on
several first-year men to come
through in crucial situations. Pete
Swart has constantly been called
on to double in the 200 IM and
200 fly, and Rick Coupe has
developed into the team's top
butterflier.
