Undefeated Swimmers

Tankmen Seek Sixth Straight

By Steve Giannini

After a pre-exam victory over
Catholic University by 69-35, the
Cavalier Mermen open the second
semester season tomorrow at 2:30
against VMI in Memorial Gym.

In a recent meet VMI was
beaten by VPI 65-38 and the team
does not appear to be as strong
as it has been in the past few
years. However, the Keydets do
have two notable swimmers in
sprinter Bob Costigan, who swims
both the 50 yard free style and
100 yard free style, and in distance
man Dave Griffin.

The fortunes of the University
swimmers have not been lucky at
all. During the semester break
Nelson Workman contracted pneumonia
and thus may not be able
to swim again this year. Fourth
year-man Tom Finnegan dropped
out of school for personal reasons.

Nevertheless two practices were
held Monday when the swimmers
returned to the University Sunday
night. Coach Law commented that
none of the team look particularly
sharp and that there were not
any outstanding times turned in.
Coach Law does believe that his
team has more good swimmers
than VMI, and that Virginia will
win with the changes he has had
to make.

Fledglings To Be Tried

Many first year-men will be
called on in this meet to swim.
Pete Swart will be swimming in
the 200 yard free and fly, Bob
Sinnott will be entered in the
200 and 500 yard free style, while
Don Farmer will make his debut
in the 200 yard individual medley.

Coach Law expects to take first
and second place in the diving
event even with two rookie divers,
Jay Wainwright and Kenny Bishop.
It is worth noting that Jim
Busch bettered his own school
record in the one meter dive against
Catholic University by scoring
199.5 points.

Another Record

In the same meet the 400 yard
medley relay team of Jack Wilson,
Jim Sonneborn, Phil Ronniger and
Terry Gromel set a new record
of 3:53.5.
