Cavayearlings Topple
Roanoke JV Maroons

By Sandy Prater

Despite a somewhat sloppy
second half, which saw nine Cavayearling
turnovers, Virginia's first-year
team stopped the junior
varsity of Roanoke College Monday
night, 82-67, to capture its
second win in as many outings.

Once again the spark was provided
by the backcourt tandem of
Kevin Kennelly and Johnny Hill.
Hill, who scored 26 points in the
opener against VMI, tallied 14
points and five assists, and Kennelly
netted 16 points and six
assists, with 14 of the points coming
in the first half.

Gerry Stars

However, it was the second
half effort of center Bill Gerry
that proved to be the undoing of
Roanoke's JV's. The 6′ 7″
Gerry, who was held to one point
in the first half, came storming
back in the second to wind up
with 17 points and rebounds, tops
in both divisions.

The Roanoke JV's came back
with a strong second half effort,
capitalizing on the Cavayearling
floor mistakes, but could never
narrow the gap to less than nine
points. Giving way to the superior
height of the Cavayearlings on the
boards, the JV's nevertheless had
four men in double figures, with
Bob White's 16 points leading in
that category.

Statistically, the Cavayearlings
were in good form, as they hit on
38 of 83 field goal attempts, and
grabbed 50 rebounds as opposed to
Roanoke's 37.
