Open Year
Virginia's cagers began practice
Monday, October 16th at 3:30
in University Hall, thereby opening
the University's sixty-second season
in intercollegiate basketball.
Coach Bill Gibson is starting
his 5th season at the helm of the
Cavaliers. He has five returning
lettermen. Leading the returnees
are Chip Case (16.4 points per
game), Mike Katos (14.8 average)
and Buddy Reams (9.1). Other
returning lettermen are Norm
Carmichael (6.0 average), and
Gary Laws (2.8). Outstanding
sophomores coming up from last
year's freshmen team are Tony
Kinn (27.9), Tom Joyce (17.7)
and Mike Wilkes (15.4).
The Cavaliers will open their
24-game schedule at St. John's
University on December 2nd. Their
home opener will be against the
University of South Carolina on
December 11th. The Cavaliers will
play twelve away games and
twelve home games.
On December 20th and 21st,
the Cavaliers will participate in
the First Annual Marshall University
Invitational Basketball
Tournament in Huntington, West
Virginia. Other teams in the
tournament are Bowling Green,
Manhattan and the host team Marshall.
