Rugby Club Wins Colonel's Cup

In a successful effort to retain
the Colonel's Cup, the Virginia
Rugby Football Club soundly defeated
Washington by a score of
12 to 6. The cup was donated
several years ago by Colonel Van
Orman, an alumnus of the University.
It is annually awarded
to the winner of the Virginia-Washington
match, and has never
left Charlottesville.

Played before an enthusiastic
and "high" spirited Homecoming
crowd, the game got off to a quick
start as Washington scored on their
first play from the scrum. The
conversion attempt was unsuccessful
and Washington led 3-0.

Virginia quickly got back in the
game on a penalty kick by Julian
"The Golden Toe" Rainey. With
the score tied 3-3 Virginia's potent
scrum began to dominate the line-outs
and the loose scrums, and Virginia
was continually in Washington
territory. Mike O'Malley soon
put the hosts ahead to stay with
a dazzling sprint around the blind
side of the scrum.

Just before half-time Rainey
added another penalty kick to send
Virginia off the field with a comfortable
9-3 lead.

About mid-way through the final
half Rainey completed the christening
of his new kicking show with
a perfect shot through the uprights
to cushion the lead at 12-3.
Moments before the final whistle
the never-say-die Washington
squad added a try to finalize the
score at 12-6. The "A" team's
record is now 4-0.
