Ruggers Kayo Punchless Keydets

By easily knocking off VMI
49-0, the ruggers demonstrated
Saturday that they are the
team to beat in the upcoming
Commonwealth Cup series in
two weeks.

In a well-played game,
Virginia displayed some
outstanding team play. No
fewer than seven players scored
tries. Four-pointers were
notched by Ray Hornblower,
coach David Williams, Randy
Payne, Dave Hudson, Byron
Shankman, Oliver and Peter
Schmidt (twice). Schmidt also
kicked in seven conversions
and a penalty kick to account
for 23 points.

Captain Jay Waldron, who
passed for four tries though
held scoreless himself, viewed
the victory as "our best effort
of the year." Though the
Keydets proved no challenge,
the match was characterized by
the coordinated team play the
ruggers will need May 5 and 6
at Nameless Field. At that
time, the champion of east
coast rugby will be decided.

With an extraordinary
winning effort against the
Welsh All-Stars, the
Charitables, two weeks ago,
and this weekend's success, the
"A" siders have some
momentum building up. Part
of this is due to the presence of
new coach, David Williams of Wales.

Williams has been stressing
conditioning in his workouts
and the team is in its best
shape ever. Final tuneup for
the "A" siders comes this
weekend in Norfolk in
tournament play.

The bullish "B" siders have
been winning with a
remarkable consistency, too.
Washington and Lee's finest
fell to the "B's", 16-4,
Thursday and the ruggers
followed this up with a 21-13
stomping of Roanoke College
Saturday.

The "C" side overcame
W&L, 12-8, last week but
succumbed to Roanoke, 16-4,
Saturday. Filling out the state
was a close 16-12 defeat
administered to the "D" side
Saturday by a determined
group of Lynchburg's "A" siders.
