Cav Grapplers Pin 30-15 Loss On VCU
By FLETCHER THOMPSON
Wrestling Coach George
Edwards pulled his entire
starting line-up for Virginia
Commonwealth Tuesday night
but it didn't do the Rams
much good as they went down
to defeat, 30-15.
"I wanted to give the "B"
squadders some experience,"
Edwards said at his move.
"They work hard all year and
don't get much credit."
JV's Crush
The JV's made the most of
their opportunity jumping out
to a 24-3 lead after the
158-pound class and then held
on down the stretch to give the
Cavs their eighth victory in
twelve outings.
First-year man Joe Torrice,
who subbed for regular Tom
Byrum at 118, built up a 4-1
first-period score against VCU's
Ray Ward.
Ward, a third-year grappler,
came back to tie the bout at
the end of the second, but then
dug his own grave by getting
caught in the middle of a
Granby roll. Torrice used the
three points for the near fall to
their fullest advantage to gain
an 11-9 decision.
Freeman Pin
Joe Freeman, did away
with any element of suspense
in his 126-pound match and
disposed of Barry Johnson
with a cradle in 2:41.
Due to the tardiness of
VCU's 134-pounder in getting
dressed, Mike McGonnigal,
who moved up to 142 for the
meet, found himself in his
usual position of being third
man to wrestle.
The Greenville, Pa. native
broke a third-period tie with a
takedown in the last two
minutes to give himself a 7-5
decision and the 'Hoos a 12-0
lead.
Near Shutout
Tommy Legge, a Virginia
high school champion several
years back, spoiled the Cavs
shutout hopes with a 7-0
victory over Kurt Zunner in
134.
Don Drew, a third-yearman
from Virginia Beach, found
Mark Klopfenstein to his
liking, flattening him after
255.
Rams Squelched
After Jeff Bartlett did the
honors of walking out on the
mat to accept a forfeit at 158,
things got slightly difficult for
the matmen as they tried to
put the match out of reach. It
was not until the 190-pound
class, when George Gregory
decisioned Fenton Priest 4-0,
that the Rams last chance was
squelched.
With the outcome settled,
regular heavyweight Ken
Mahon, wrestling because as
Edwards said, "we don't have
anybody else," padded the
margin of victory by pinning
Carsley Clark. Clark, who
could very well be billed for
plowing up the U-Hall mat
with his shoulder blades, fell in
4:39.
The grapplers next
encounter is with UNC at
Chapel Hill this Saturday.
