Furman, Davidson
Lead Southern Loop
Furman and Davidson, with
9-1 and 7-1 league records,
have established themselves as
the class of the Southern
Conference as the SC
basketball race enters its
critical stages.
So dominating have been
the Paladins and Wildcats that
only East Carolina, last year's
NCAA tourney representative,
has a non-losing league mark.
The Pirates are 6-6.
The Citadel's Bulldogs
follow in fourth place with a
4-5 league mark and round out
the first division.
Three teams from Virginia
reside in the second division as
William & Mary's 3-5 record is
good for fifth, Richmond's 4-7
mark places them sixth and
VMI's 2-7 ledger has them
eighth and last.
Press Maravich's
Appalachian State five holds
down seventh spot with a 3-6
SC log.
It hasn't been a very good
year outside the conference for
most of the squads either as
only Furman,Davidson and East
Carolina have overall winning
records. Furman's 14-7 is the
league best.
Outside the SC, the three
Big Five schools have compiled
a 7-24 record against rather
tough competition.
Richmond's Aaron Stewart
leads all SC scorers, averaging
over 27 points per game.
