Shaw Dominates ACC Stats;
Sullivan Sets Pace In Grabs

By WHIT HOLCOMB

Junior quarterback Bruce
Shaw of North Carolina State
and senior running back Steve
Jones of Duke have captured
the 1972 major statistical
honors.

Richmond native Shaw won
the total offense and passing
crowns while Jones, who hails
from Sanford, N.C., owns the
rushing title.

Shaw, in becoming only the
12th quarterback in ACC
history to capture both the
aerial and total offense
departments in the same year,
finished with 1,708 passing
yards and 51 yards on the
ground for a total of 1,759
yards. His passing total is
fourth best in league history
and he now ranks fifth among
all-time ACC total offense
leaders.

Jones, a cinch all-ACC
candidate, rushed for 100
yards or more in six contests
and finished with 1,236 yards,
second only to Don
McCauley's record 1,720 yards
set two years ago.

Only the eighth runner in
ACC history to accumulate
more than 1,000 yards rushing
in a single season, Jones holds
the conference record for most
carries in a career and ranks
second in career yardage.

Maryland quarterback Bob
Avellini ranks third in total
offense with an average of
108.4 yards a game and could
surpass the second-place Jones
with a 153 yard total offense
performance against Miami this
week. North Carolina
quarterback Nick Vidnovic
nails down the fourth spot
while Ken Pentitore ranks
fifth.

Wahoo Dave Sullivan
finished as the league's leading
pass receiver with 51 catches
for 662 yards and seven
six-pointers. His career
receiving totals of 120 grabs
for 1577 yards and an average
of 13.1 yards per reception
were all Cavalier career records.

N.C. State's Stan Fritts is
the first sophomore to capture
the scoring crown, and his 106
points on 17 touchdowns and
two two-point conversions
ranks third in ACC history.
