Coaches Tap Five Cavs

By STEVE GASKE

Having posted a final record
of 8-3-2 for the season, five
Cavalier soccer players have
received mention in the first of
the All-so mething-or-other
teams to be announced for the
season gone by. In balloting by
the coaches, two University
booters were named to the
All-State first team and three
others to the second team.

Undefeated in state play
until a 1-0 loss to Madison in
the title game, Virginia's Jay
Meaney and team captain Jay
Ziehl were named to the first
team. Sam Crosby, Rick
Sanders, and Scott Peyton
were second team selections.

In addition, Meaney,
Crosby, Ziehl, and Peyton were
named as starters for the East
in the East-West All-star game
to be played at Madison
Sunday.

First-year forward Rick
Sanders is the lone Cav
representative on the second
team for the East.

Ziehl, a fourth-year fullback,
is probably the most skilled of
the Cav booters.

Meaney's selection was
based on his fine front line
play throughout the season as
he led the team in scoring. A
second-year man, Meaney,
along with Sam Corbin, has
been chosen as Co-captain of
next year's team.

Peyton was a second team
All-ACC choice last year.
Sunday's game will probably
be the last for Peyton as a
representative of the
University, however. After two
outstanding years for the Cavs,
the Charlottesville native has
decided to ply his trade at
Virginia Tech while he attends
the school of Forestry there.
