Booters Take Division Playoff, 3-1

By STEVE GASKE

Yesterday afternoon the
University soccer team
advanced to the State
Championship by defeating
Randolph-Macon, 3-1, in a
playoff for the Eastern
Division Championship.

By virtue of the win, the
Cavaliers (7-2-2) will go on to
host Madison next Tuesday or
Wednesday, depending on
when Madison can return from
an NCAA College Division
Tournament game on Sunday.

Against Randy-Mac the
Cavs fell behind early in the
game before Geoff Curme
netted a goal on a cross from
the wing to even the score at
1-1 for the first half.

In what Coach Jim
Stephens described as "the
toughest physical game we've
had all year," Sam Crosby was
put out of action by the
Yellow Jacket goalie.

After running at the goalie
on a save, the goalie tripped
him. When Crosby came back,
the Yellow Jacket goalie hit
him, cutting his eye.

Jay Meaney scored on the
ensuing penalty kick to put
Virginia ahead to stay.

Meaney scored on another
penalty kick later in the game
when a holding penalty was
called inside the penalty area.

Jeff Lundy played a good
game on defense after coming
in to replace Chip Williams,
who was thrown out of the
game. Jay Ziehl played his
usual dominating game on
se.

Scott Peyton was credited
with eight saves on the 12
Yellow Jacket Shots. The Cavs,
in turn, outshot Randy-Mac
with a total of 16.

As chairman of the NCAA
Southern District selection
committee, Mr. Stephens
announced that ACC
runner-up, Duke, was extended
a bid to the Southern Regional
Tournament. Including
Clemson, this puts two ACC
teams in the top four teams in
the South.
