Cavaliers Place Second In State Meet

By STEVE GASKE

While most people were
watching the homecoming
football loss on Saturday, the
Virginia cross country team
placed second in the State
meet, losing only to perennial
winner William and Mary by a
score of 20-51.

For the first time in 12 years
a runner from someplace other
than W and M ran off with
individual honors for the meet.
Phil Meyer continued his
dominance in the harrier sport
by covering the 6.5 mile
course in 35:17.

Despite losing a 60 yard lead
at about the four mile mark
Meyer was able to outdistance
the Indian's Bill Louv by 12
seconds. Meyer took a wrong
turn in the middle of the race
and didn't realize his mistake
until Louv called to him. After
cutting through the woods to
get back on the course, Meyer
was even with Louv, who, like
Meyer, has beaten everyone
except UNC's Reggie McAfee
this year.

Commenting on his team's
showing, Cavalier Coach Lou
Onesty said, "Everybody ran
better than his potential. The
farther distance helped us."

Following their general habit
for the season, the rest of the
Cavs ran in a pack. Jerry Hart
finished 15th followed by third
man Mike Pace in 16th. Donal
Day came in with them in
17th.

With only one runner
breaking up the pack, fifth
man Joe Wood completed the
scoring for Virginia with a 19th
place finish.

Scoring for the meet had W
and M 20, Cavs 51, Old
Dominion 95, Madison and
VMI tied for fourth with 123,
and the University of
Richmond coming in last on its
home course, with 153.
