First-year man Scott
Gardner, who comes to the
University by way of sunny
Sarasota, Fla., has been named
Cavalier Daily Player of The
Week after a stellar
performance last Saturday
afternoon when he
quarterbacked the Wahoos to a
45-14 win over VMI.

Gardner took over in the
second quarter from starter
George Allen and, after failing
to move the team on his first
series of downs, rang up two
quick scoring drives to put the
game on ice.

He first captained a 59-yard
march to the Keydet end zone
and, with only 1:05 remaining
in the half, he tossed a 39-yard
TD strike to end Dave Sullivan
to make the score 21-7,
Virginia, at intermission.

That score was set up by a
long Gerard Mullins punt
return and Mullins, returning
to form after a bout with a leg
injury, set up the next one as
well, returning a Keydet punt
to the VMI nine from where
Gardner carried it in on the
next play.

Virginia's next six-pointer
was also a Gardner effort,
Scott sneaking it over from the
two to cap a 61-yard drive.

Gardner also had a hand in
the Wahoos' last touchdown as
he hit slotback Chuck Belic
with a 14-yarder over the
middle and across the VMI goal
line.

Scott, who spurned an
athletic grant-in-aid from
Baylor and an academic
scholarship offer from Yale to
attend Virginia, completed 1
of 19 passes for 186 yards and
two scores. He had three
intercepted.

Gardner was a two-sport
All-Star in high school and also
considered a generous $30,000
bonus offer from baseball's
Kansas City Royals before
enrolling here. The Royals
made him a ninth-round draft
pick.

After his fine showing
against the Keydets, Gardner
was named as an Honorable
Mention member of United
Press Internationals Backfield
of the Week. It's doubtful,
however, that Gardner will
relish these honors as much as
he appeared to revel in the
good-natured slanders of his
teammates after the game. He
really seemed to be enjoying
himself.

Two other players who
turned in "POW" performances
were Sullivan (133 yards with
seven receptions), Mullins (157
yards on four punt returns)
and Co-captain Wills Williams,
who led the team in tackles
from his defensive end spot.
