Cavs, Terps Play to 1-1 Tie

By WHIT HOLCOMB

Pat Cunningham's goal with
51 seconds left in the second
half enabled Maryland to gain a
1-1 tie with Virginia before
1,500 spectators at the new
soccer field yesterday.

The Terrapins were within a
minute of only their fourth
loss in ACC competition, when
Cunningham booted a loose
ball through the net for the
tying goal. Virginia took the
lead on an 18-yard left-footed
kick by Jay Meaney with
24:20 gone in the first half.

The Orange and Blue
booters seemed on their way to
registering an important
conference victory, but were
unable to clear the ball from
their half of the field as a pass
was intercepted by George
Taratsides, Maryland's
All-America candidate.

He fired on the Cavalier net,
Scott Peyton made the save,
and on the rebound in front of
the goal, Cunningham rifled in
his game-tying kick.

Taratsides, who was in the
nets his freshman year and on
offense as a forward last year,
returned to the nets this year
and started the game there.

Midway through the second
half, with the Maryland offense
seemingly inert, he was moved to
the forward position. Coach
Doyle Royal, who is in his
27th year at College Park,
explained the move this way,
"Taratsides was our leading
scorer last year and was
all-league at either position,
and I believed that we needed
him on offense. Also, he was
fresh and could go at full
speed."

Both coaches felt that their
teams should have won. After
the game, Cavalier Coach Jim
Stephens, who is in his first
year as soccer mentor, said,
"Our kids played well. We
should have won the match but
it was a mental lapse of not
clearing the ball out."

Coach Royal expressed his
thoughts about the contest,
saying, "We knew we would be
in for a tough battle. Coach
Stephens has done a fine
coaching job here at Virginia.
The game was well-played, but
we played in our half of the
field most of the afternoon."

Both goalies played well.
Goalies Taratsides and Kern of
Maryland had eight shots fired
upon them and were credited
with two saves each. Cavalier
goalie Peyton had several
spectacular plays in the nets as
Maryland shot 12 times on the
Virginia goal.
