Cavalier Soccer Team Plays Host
To Randolph Macon In Home Opener

By NED ROBERTS

This afternoon on the new
University Hall soccer held at 2
p m the Virginia soccer team,
coached by Jim Stephens, will
take on Randolph Macon
College (3-1) in the Cavaliers
home opener

This game has particular
importance because it is likely
that the winner will be the
Pstern Division champions in
the Virginia Soccer
Conference.

Randolph Macon usually
has a strong team and this year
is no exception. The Yellow
Jackets have a squad very
similar to the Cavaliers in that
they have a very tight defense
to go along with an offense
that has scoring problems at
times.

Their defense, which has
everyone returning, is led by
the two inside fullbacks Kevin
Kornek and Rick Matson. The
offense though also
experienced, has thus far this
year only averaged 2.5 goals a
game. In the only game this
season with similar opposition.
RM. won 3-2 over George
Mason, a 2-1 loser to Virginia

Virginia this season is also
built around a stingy defense
which in three games, including
the Uruguayan exhibition has
allowed only one goal

The defense is headed by
second-year goalie Scott
Peyton, who was second-team
all ACC last year as a first-year
man was particularly
impressive in the exhibition
match against Uruguay. In that
game. Peyton made several
spectacular saves to preserve
the shutout in a 0-0 tie.

Playing in front of Peyton
and doing most of the
defensive work this year is the
fullback line, which consists of
Paul Corbin, Phil Russell, and
Co-Captains Jay Zhl and Chip
Williams.

The starting forward line is
not definitely known, because

Coach Stephens is still
experimenting in an attempt to
find the right starting
combination. Special credit,
however should be given to
Jay Meaney, who scored both
goals in the 2-0 victory over
North Carolina

Both coaches are reportedly
worried about today's
Each feels that the contest will
be a close low scoring match.
In addition Virginia will be
looking for revenge of a 1-0
less suffered two years ago
