Harriers Trounce Deacons,
Cav Surge Led By Meyer
By STEVE GASKE
Friday afternoon the
Virginia cross country team
beat Wake Forest, 23-38, for
its second win of the season, in
a meet held at Winston-Salem.
Leading the Cavaliers' surge
in a race that was marred by
muddy and windy conditions,
was ace runner Phil Meyer who
ran away with the individual
honors for the meet. Meyer
coasted in with a time of 26:34
to beat his nearest competitor
by 17 seconds.
Behind Meyer, in the second
and third spots, were two
Deacon runners, Tom Paye and
John Gulledge. Paye has beaten
Meyer before, but was unable
to keep up with the pace.
With the exception of the
two Wake runners, the Cavs
placed all their men in front of
the rest of the Deacon team.
Gerry Hart led the rest of the
pack; finishing fourth in 27:40.
Mike Pace was one second
behind him, followed by Joe
Wood, Donal Day, Steve
Williams, and Bob Peckt.
While it's good to have a
real good first runner like Phil
Meyer, Coach Onesty said, "it
takes five men and what we'd
really like is to have all our
boys packed about five seconds
behind Meyer."
Friday the Cavaliers will
host a powerful Duke team
that will be notable for the
absence of defending ACC
champion Bob Wheeler.
Wheeler, back from the
Olympics, has decided not to
run cross country this fall.
Duke still has sophomore
star Scott Eden and star miler
Steve Wheeler to give them the
strength to be considered the
favorites in the ACC this year.
Coach Onesty did say,
however, that his team feels
that it has a real good chance of
beating Duke this year.
