FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS

Virginia's 1973 football
team is blessed with the return
of 17 starters and excellent size
in the offensive line. The key
to the season most likely lies in
the hands of a more
experienced 1972 defensive
unit. This group gave up 345
yards a game while the offense
was grinding out 327 yards.

Billy Williams, a three-year
defensive starter, has departed
but replacing him will be last
year's middle linebacker, Craig
Critchley. The rest of the
defensive line includes Stanley
Land, Tommy McGraw and
most likely Leroy Still.

A veteran linebacking corps
will be headed by converted
tackle Dick Ambrose, a
definite post season honors
candidate. The other certain
starter is two year letterman
Dan Blakely, however, the
third spot is still up for grabs.

The secondary has an
experienced flavor with
all-ACC candidates Steve Sroba
and Gerard Mullins. With six
other experienced defensive
backs on the scene, the
secondary should make some
noted improvements over last
year.

Since 1968's winning
season, there hasn't been a
whole lot to cheer in Scott
Stadium in the fall. However,
this year's team shows
promises of carrying Virginia
out of the football doldrums.
