Lacross Toys With Keydets For Fifth Victory

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

It was a clear case of
military unpreparedness
Saturday on Lannigan Field as
the Cavalier baseball team shot
holes through hapless VMI for
an 11-1 victory.

Virginia pounded the
military men for 13 hits,
including several extra-base
jobs, and effectively combined
them with four Keydet errors
for their tallies. In the
meantime, VMI scattered eight
hits and left lead-off men on
base in each of the first six
innings.

Fourth-year hurler Dave
Lacross went the distance to
bring his slate to 5-2, allowing
only a ninth-inning consolation
run.

Record Now 16-11-1

In advancing their season
record to 16-11-1, the batmen
recorded one of their biggest
but least surprising wins. The
Keydets, now stand 2-14, a
mark not unknown to VMI
squads.

Sroba Starts Scoring

Steve Sroba put the Cavs
ahead to stay in the first inning
when he reached base on an
error, moved to third on a
Jonathan Williams single, and
scored on a wild pitch.

A walk to Sroba in the
third opened up the first big
break in the VMI dam as
Williams, Dave Bratt, Dean
Pallotta, and Pete Anderson all
followed with base knocks of
varying length to boost the
margin to 4-0.

Cavs Keep It Up

Not satisfied, the Cavs then
proceeded to engage in a form
of overkill and squeezed seven
more runs out of two
frustrated Keydet pitchers.
Included in this barrage was
first-year leftfielder Pete
Anderson's seventh-inning
home run, his first of the year.

The Cavs last game of the
year was yesterday's meeting
with traditional rival Virginia
Tech.
