Hungover Ruggers Stomp Baltimore

By G.D. ROTHENBERG

The Virginia Rugby
Football Club upped its
season's record to 4-1-1
Saturday on Nameless Field in
front of 500 onlookers,
knocking off the Baltimore
Rugby Club, 16-9.

Though the score does not
indicate it, Virginia toyed with
the opposition in a contest
many felt was loosely refereed.
The Baltimore team played a
very physical game and made
its presence felt on the field.

According to rugger captain
Jay Waldron, "On a number of
plays we waited for the whistle
to blow and it never did. They
were offsides almost all the
time."

Waldron added that the
ruggers slacked off a bit in the
second half after trotting out
to a 12-6 margin in the first
half. "We got off early and
coasted. You could say we
were hung over from the night
before."

Debut For New Player-Coach

Pacing the ruggers were
Dave Clapp with two 4 point
tries, Randy Paine and Dave
Hudson each kicking in three
point penalty kicks, and
Hudson with a two - point
conversion boot.

Debuting for the ruggers
"A" side was newly-acquired
player-coach David Williams,
late of South Africa. According
to Waldron he "played a
terrific game" at inside center.

Home Match Saturday

The "A" siders would
attribute their mediocre
showing against Baltimore to a
let-down following their
sensational 15-12 triumph over
the Charitables last Tuesday.
The Charitables suffered only
their second loss ever on the
Continent, the first a
controversial one point
decision against Manhattan.

Next on the schedule for
the ruggers is VMI on Nameless
Field Saturday. The "A" and
"C" siders will play VMI in
what is expected to be an easy
game, while the "B" siders and
"D" siders mix it up with
Roanoke, also at Nameless Field.
