Polo Riders To Meet Yale

This Sunday at 2 p.m., the
University Polo team will play
Yale University in its first
match of the spring season.

Besides the regular varsity
players Roger Steele and Reid
Graham, new varsity players
will include third-year men
Dan Shirey, and second-year
men Gregg Johnson, Jeep
Holder, and David Kirksey.
Scheduled teams for
this spring include Cornell
University and the University
of Pennsylvania, among others.

Last fall, UVa. was
undefeated in their own
arena, and for the past
three years they have ranked
second in the nation in
intercollegiate polo. Since
Virginia does not have its own
indoor arena, home games are
played only in the fall and
spring.

In a series of away games
last winter, Yale defeated UVa.
11-10, and Virginia came back
two weeks later to best them
14-12. At Cornell, the game
was tied 16-16 at the end of
the usual four chukkas of play,
and UVa. was finally defeated
by one goal in "sudden death"
overtime. Thus they entered
the National Intercollegiate
Tournament in March with
relatively little practice.

In the semi-finals, Virginia
defeated Cornell 15-12, but
they were beaten in the final
game 19-10 by the University
of Connecticut. The UVa.
intercollegiate team consisted
of Roger Steele, president of
the Virginia Polo Club, Reid
Graham, captain of the
Virginia team, Jeep Holden,
and Dan Shirey.

Yale University has
traditionally had an excellent
polo team, and the match this
Sunday should be an exciting
one. The University arena is
located five miles out on
Barracks road on the left, and
all spectators are welcome.
