"A" Ruggers Mangle UNC;
"B" Continues To Dominate

By G.D. ROTHENBERG

The air was still and crisp,
the sky a brilliant blue and the
fans were still sitting on the
grassy slopes around Nameless
Field. The mighty "A" side
ruggers had just racked up
another big with Sunday with a
45-4 manhandling of UNC'

The outcome was never in
doubt as the ruggers appeared
to score almost at will
throughout the game. The
defense shut-out North
Carolina the entire second half,
keeping the ball in threatening
field position throughout.

Tallying for the ruggers
were Buzzy Witt, John Oliver,
Courteney Hoopes, Byron
Shankman and Boyd "Possum"
Page. Hoopes, Shankman and
Page each scored twice. Peter
Schmidt kicked for 13 points
to fill out the scoring.

The ruggers will have to
duplicate their machine-like
precision next week in a trying
contest with Sud-Americana, a
Washington-based rugby club.

Sud-Americana will be
playing the rugger "A" side at
Nameless Field Sunday at 2
p.m. This club has already
clobbered GWU, the only team
that has bested the ruggers this
season.

The University's "B" side,
fresh from Saturday's 27-8
crunching of W&M's finest, will
be taking on the
Sud-Americana's "B" side
Sunday, also at Nameless field.

The "B" side has proven
itself in recent weeks as a
top-notch team in its own
right. Calch Waldron points out
"we've beaten all the "A" side
teams in Virginia with out "B"
side."

Greg Luce and Mark Storm
continue to dominate action
with the "B"s.

The rugger "C" side was
blanked by the Norfolk Irish
"A"s 13-0 in other play. And
the hard-charging fourth side
lost to Norfolk's second side
13-0 in a tune-up for next
weeks match with
Sud-Americana.
