Underclassmen Dominate ACC Stats,
Sullivan Continues To Lead Receivers

By WHIT HOLCOMB

Looking at the Atlantic Coat
Conference individual football
statistics, one realizes that the
top players will be around for
another year, and that seniors
no longer play the
predominant roles they once
did.

After six weeks of the
season, there are only two
fourth-year men in the top spots
in the latest statistics released
by the Atlantic Coast
Conference Office.

Duke Blue Devil Steve Jones,
who leads the conference in
rushing, and Wahoo Dave
Sullivan, the league leader in
receiving, are the only two
seniors atop the various
categories.

The workhorse Jones has
carried the pigskin 152 times
for a total of 639 yards and
91.3 yard average per game.
Jones has logged the ball 50
more times than Cavalier Kent
Merritt. Merritt has 102 carries
for 481 yards and a
league-leading 4.7 yards a tote.

Sullivan, the pride of
Steelton, Pennsylvania, has 39
receptions for 523 yards and
six touchdowns. Sully has 12
more grabs than his nearest
pursuer, Pat Kenney of N.C.
State whose yardage totals 538
with three six-pointers and an
average of 3.9 catches a game.

Wahoo slotback Chuck Belic
ranks sixth in aerial-grabbings
with 21 for 388 yards and
three TD's.

N.C. State senior Bruce Shaw
heads the total offense
department with a per game
average of 168.9 yards. Shaw
has figured in on 152 gains and
has accounted for 1182 yards,
a 7.8 yard per play average.

Maryland Terrapin Al
Neville, out for the year after
suffering a broken collarbone
two weeks ago against
Villanova, is second to Shaw
with 163 plays and 861 yards
for a 143.5 yard per game
average.

Neville will not be eligible
for the statistical
championship, for he will not
play the required three-fourths
of his team's contests. His
back-up man, sophomore Bob
Avellini, ranks third, however,
with 703 yards on 91 plays for
an average of 100.3 yards per
outing.

Neville continues to lead the
passing department with 59
completions in 106 throws, a
557 accuracy mark, even
though he has missed the last
two Saturdays.

Shaw ranks second, having
successfully throw 59 times
out of 113 attempts for a
leading aggregate of 1129
yards. Terrapin Avellini holds
down the third spot with 48
completions in 78 throws.
Cavalier George Allen is fourth
and counterpart Harrison Davis
is ranked fifth.

Second-year man Stan Fritts
of N.C. State is the leading
point producer with 68 points
and Tar Heel Ellis Alexander is
the kick-scoring leader with 33
points on 21 of 21 PAT's and
four of seven field goals.
