Booters To Meet
Terrapins Sunday
By RUSS BRANSFORD
This Sunday afternoon at 2
pm on its new field in back of
UHall, the Virginia soccer team
takes on Maryland in what is
probably its most important
game of the season.
This game could well decide
the ACC championship, as
both teams are perennial
contenders for the title. The
Cavaliers had won the league
title two years in a row before
the Terps took the
championship in 1971.
Last year, however,
Maryland had its uncontested
route to the title interrupted in
a closely-fought 2-1 loss at the
hands of Virginia.
Coach of the Terrapins, in
his 27th season at College Park,
is Doyle Royal. Royal, who has
won over 200 games in his
career, introduced the
recruiting of foreign players to
ACC competition, a practice
which has become
commonplace at all league
schools except Virginia.
Top name for the Terrapins is
goalie George Taratsides. After
gaining all-league mention as a
forward last season,
Taratsides has been returned to
the nets, where he started as a
freshman two years ago,
Taratsides was in the goal when
the Terps lost to the touring
Uruguayan national team two
weeks ago, 1-0. The Cavs
battled the same club to a
scoreless tie.
Other Terrapins who
received all-league mention in
1971 include fullbacks Pete
Hamilton and Melih Sensoy,
halfback Tom Armenti and
forward Nicholas Skirka. All
except Sensoy return to the
Terrapins this fall.
The Cavaliers, whose record
became 2-0-2 after Tuesday's
tie with Randolph Macon, are
at full strength except for
returning vets Andy Dupont
and Steve Kennelly, who were
both determined as out for the
year after being derailed by
pre-season injuries.
