New Natatorium Now Open For Use
Handball, Squash Facilities Ready

By STEVE GASKE

Last week signaled the
opening of the new$1.4million
natatorium adjacent to U-Hall.
As part of a recent effort to
increase athletic facilities at the
University, the natatorium
houses an Olympic sized
swimming pool, a diving well,
and viewing stands for
spectators.

Downstairs it also contains
six handball and four squash
courts for use by the
University community.

A permanent schedule for
use of the facilities has now
been worked out to replace the
temporary one originally in
use. From 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
during the week the handball
and squash courts will be open
for general use. On Sundays
the courts will be open from 1
to 10 p.m.

Although the aquatic
facilities will be used primarily
for gym classes and team
practices, they will be open
from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Mondays, Tuesdays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Thursdays, the facilities are
reserved for faculty and
administrative personnel and
their wives and children at this
same time in the evening.
Tuesdays are family evenings,
when the wives and children of
members of the University
community can go for a swim.

Weekend Swimming

In addition, the pool will be
open for general use on
Saturdays and Sundays from 2
to 5 in the afternoon. Saturday
afternoons when there is a
home football game provide
the only exception to the
schedule. On these occasions
the facilities will be closed.

In the same complex with
the natatorium is the cage
which will be opening soon. A
synthetic surface donated by
the Perry Foundation has been
installed and work will begin
soon on the erection of six
basketball courts.

These courts will be for
general use by members of the
University community except
for when gym classes or varsity
teams are using the facility.

Varsities Have Priority

This means that on days
when the football team moves
inside or when the baseball
team holds indoor practice the
facility will be closed to
general use.

ID Cards Needed

With the heavy demand
expected for the use of the
new facilities, school
identification cards will be
required for admittance,
without exception.
