Hockey Club Eyes
Future Victories

By JANE CLOSE

Tryouts for the women's
field hockey team are being
held every afternoon this week.
Practice starts at 4 p.m. on
Nameless Field.

Recruits Needed

"We really need more
people. No one will be cut and
experience isn't necessary,"
said Club President Beverly
Marcum. A veteran of the team
herself, Marcum is temporarily
acting as coach due to the
recent loss of Vi Clark.

Experienced Team Returns

The team boasts seven
returning players. These
include Chesley Garrett,
Richmond Warren, Ellen Herr,
Jusnita Buster, Jill Vines,
Paulette Jones, and Stephanie
Smiley. "There's a lot of
experience on the team. In
fact, I've never been to a first
practice where the girls have
worked so well as a unit."
commented Marcum. "This is
not meant to scare those who
might want to try out," she
said, "for we hope to form an
A and B team, consisting of
eleven players each.

Lynchburg Is Tough Opp

Facing an eight game
schedule which includes the
home opener with Virginia
State on Saturday, Oct. 14,
and the Blue Ridge
Tournament at Madison
College, the girls look to
Lynchburg for their toughest
opposition.

"The Lynchburg team is
very well disciplined; their
speed might present some
trouble," said Miss Marcum.
"But," she was quick to add,
"all prospects point to a great
winning season."
