Third Place

Playing against the
backdrop of the scenic
Homestead in Hot Springs, the
University's golf team upset a
16-team field to win the state
intercollegiate golf
championship.

Undoubtedly inspired by
the natural beauty of the plush
resort, the squad combined for
a total of 624 strokes, which
easily outdistanced pre-tourney
favorite VPI's 634.

One of the Homestead's
three courses, the Lower
Cascades course, was the scene
of the action on a rainy
weekend. The inclement
weather that plagued every
sports event last weekend also
made a mess of the golf
tournament.

Individual scores soared for
several reasons. First, the
rainstorm dumped inches of
rain of the course and brought
high winds into play. Secondly,
the already difficult layout was
set-up to be a true challenge to
the golfers. The tees were
placed all the way back and the
pin placements made it almost
impossible to hit an approach
shot close to the hole.

Finally, there were the
distractions offered by the
Homestead itself. Springtime in
the majestic mountains of
southwestern Virginia is
breathtaking with its lush
plants and bright flowers.
Certainly the players found it
difficult to maintain the cool
concentration that is such a
large part of the game, not to
mention finding their balls in
the long rough and dense
vegetation.

Taking all this into account,
one must appreciate the fine
performance of the Cavalier
golfers, who swept the first
three places in the race for
medalist honors.

Leading this pack was team
captain Britt Stenson, who put
together rounds of 76 and 75
for a winning total of 151.
Following Stenson was
third-year man Mike Mozur,
who had a 78 and a 77 for a
155 total. Rounding out the
trio of leaders was King
Ochmig with an 83-73-156.

The top four scores from
each team were used to
compile the team scoring. Each
player turned in a score for 36
holes, having played 18 on
Sunday and another 18 on
Monday.

Some of the other team
scores which followed the
winners' total include VPI, as
mentioned above, with 654,
and William and Mary with
641. Richmond tallied 649,
Randolph-Macon scored 654,
and Hampden-Sydney tied
with Washington & Lee at 666.
Other scores in the field were
somewhere up in the
stratosphere.

Although the Cavs took the
first three places, there were
several other good scores
turned in by the University
golfers. Brad Reynolds took
fourth place on the team with
rounds of 81 and 82 for 163
Finishing in a tie at 166 were
Bill Hickson and Phil Crane.
Hickson had an 84 and an 82
while Crane shot 85 and 81 for
his total.

It was somewhat of a
revenge win for the Cavs, who
had fallen to Virginia Tech in a
dual match during the regular
season by 5½ to 2½.
Apparently the Cavaliers
adjusted better to the
surroundings of the Homestead
than did the Turkeys.

There will be a long layoff
for the team until their next
match, which will be a
three-team affair with
Washington & Lee and Madison
College. The teams will meet
on May 9 at Madison.
