Batmen Fall To Duke,
Rebound Against Wake

By BILL BERNO

Costly errors resulted in a
disappointing loss to Duke, but
the Cavalier baseball team
rebounded on Sunday to crush
Wake Forest and achieve a split
of their weekend games.

In the first game of a
scheduled doubleheader, the
Cavs fell to Duke, 4-2. The
second game was washed out
by heavy rains.

The Cavs drew first blood in
the second inning when Steve
Sroba tripled off the left field
fence. Duke leftfielder Budd
Flesh ran into the fence on the
play and was forced to leave
the game. Sroba came home
moments later when Dave
Bratt singled into left field.

Starting pitcher Steve
Brindle was unable to protect
his lead as Duke bounced
back with one run in the third
inning. Bill Furbusch, who had
come in to replace Flesh,
walked and was sacrificed to
second. He took third on an
infield out and came home
when Cavalier catcher Al
Bracht could not field a pitch
and was charged with a passed
ball.

In the sixth inning of the
seven inning game, Duke
wrapped things up for good
when John Poff homered over
the right field fence, Furbusch
singled home Dick Bersin and
the Cavs' Terry Dan made a
remarkable throw which
eluded the second baseman,
first baseman, and pitcher
before finally being retrieved
by Bracht.

Desperately trying to catch
up, the Cavaliers were able to
score once in the seventh
inning when Robbin Marvin
tripled and scored on a
sacrifice fly by Dan. But that
was all, as Schwartz settled
down and retired the side to
record a complete game
victory.

On Sunday, the Cavaliers
exploded for five runs in the
seventh inning to register a
come-from-behind victory over
Wake Forest.

A third inning home run by
Wake's Chip Holden was the
only score until the seventh,
when the Cavaliers put
together a walk, a balk by
Deacon pitcher Fran Corey, an
error, stolen base, two-run
single by cleanup hitter Sroba,
run-scoring single by Bratt, and
a two-run homer by Jonathan
Williams to score five runs and
break open the tight game.
