Cavalier Netmen Returned To Form Yesterday, Blasting VMI's Keydets, 9-0

It was a clear case of
military unpreparedness
yesterday on the Perry
Memorial Courts as the varsity
netmen bombarded VMI, 9-0.

Commenting on his team's
fifth shutout victory, Coach
Gordon Burris, who was
amazingly calm after the
overwhelming win, could only
say that his boys were simply
"too much" for the hapless
Keydets.

In an effort to give the
opposition a fighting chance
and some of his overworked
players a rest, Coach Burris
employed a revamped line-up
which included first-yearmen
Pete Adolf and Irving Cantor.

Even this was too much for
the boys in gray who took the
path of several other Cavalier
opponents and failed to take a
set in eighteen tries. The
Keydets went one better,
though, and declined to take
more than three games in a set
and accomplished that only
once.

Number one singles man
Doug Waterman set the pattern
for the day by crushing Dwight
Rowland, 6-0, 6-0. The next
three men followed in similar
fashion with Hoyt Murray and
Don Napier thrashing Jack
Neff and Pete Shelby by
identical 6-1, 6-0 scores at
second and third singles, while
Frank Hatten outgunned Tom
Trumbo, 6-1, 6-1.

Taking their cues from their
older teammates, Adolf, who
performed well in exhibition
matches over spring break, and
Cantor drubbed Tom Dick and
Doug MacGregor by scores of
6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-0,
respectively.

The Keydets showed slight
signs of life in the doubles
matches but were still trampled
by the Cavalier combinations.

The number one team of
Hatten and Rick Swift
destroyed Neff and Shelby,
6-1, 6-3, and Frank Spratlin-Adolf
romped over Rowland
and MacGregor, 6-1, 6-2.

Cantor and Waterman, who
was competing in doubles for
the first time this year,
rounded out the scoring by
stomping Trumbo and Dick,
6-1, 6-0, in the number three
contest.

Yesterday's win raises the
Cavs' record to 11-3 and marks
their third straight victory
following three 5-4 losses on
the Southern road trip.

They will take today off to
sharpen their games before
returning to action tomorrow
against VPI, a squad Burris
describes as "pretty decent."

Then come two ACC tests
with Wake Forest on Saturday
and UNC the following
Monday.
