Barry Parkhill Shoots Over Tom Burleson of N.C. State

Cavalier Ace Scored 30 To Pace Victory Over Wolfpack

On the strength of a
30-point performance against
N.C. State, Saturday, Barry
Parkhill has regained the ACC
scoring lead according to
statistics released by the league
yesterday.

Parkhill, who added 27
points against VPI, now has a
23.0 average to 21.7 for Tom
Burleson of N.C. State. Tom
McMillen of Maryland holds
the third spot with 20.5, but
Robert McAdoo is challenging
with a 19.7 average, including
31 points against Burleson,
Monday night.

Jim Hobgood is 11th in the
conference with a 14.3 average.
He is also in the top ten in field
goal percentage, having hit 106
of 206 attempts for 51.4%.

Burleson has a commanding
lead in rebounding, leading
Alan Shaw of Duke by almost
70 caroms. Scott McCandlish is
sixth with an 8.9 average.
Hobgood and Frank DeWitt are
averaging 6.8 and 5.6,
respectively.

The North Carolina Tar
Heels, leading the nation in
team shooting, are dominating
the free throws statistics.
George Karl has hit 85.9% on
55 of 64 attempts. Gary
Melchionni of Duke has cashed
in on 85.1%, and Dennis
Wuycik has made 82.7%. Kim
Husband, who sank all ten of
his free throws against the
Cavaliers, would be in the top
three if he had scored the
minimum of 40 free throws.

Mr. BP holds the eighth spot
with 70 of 93 or 75.3%.
McMillen has scored an
amazing 103 points on free
throws. Dave Angel of Clemson
has had 130 charity tosses, but
has made only 94.

Bobby Jones of UNC
continues to shoot at nearly a
70% clip to lead in field goal
accuracy. Parkhill leads in both
shots attempted and field goals
made. He has hit 48.2%,
sinking 147 out of 305 shots.

Virginia is tied with North
Carolina in the team standings.
Both teams have five
conference games remaining,
including a contest at Chapel
Hill on February 26 which will
probably decide the conference
regular season title. However,
both teams still have improving
Maryland and surprising Duke
to overcome before the end of
the season. The possibility of
an upset is never remote in the
ACC.

Last night, Duke met Wake
Forest in an interesting battle
for Cavalier followers. The
Wahoos take on Wake Forest,
Saturday, and then grapple
with Duke the following week.
The outcome of last night's
game will be very important
for Coach Gibson and his team.
They must play their remaining
games one at a time, and not
look ahead to the
season-ending games with
Maryland and North Carolina.

Being the sixth-ranked team
in the nation, the Cavaliers can
anticipate an all-out effort
from each of their remaining
opponents. The season is far
from over.
