Burleson, State Test Cavs Tomorrow

Mr. Thomas Burleson,
basketball player
extraordinaire, is a
many-faceted individual. He is,
at once, seven foot four inches
tall, the leading candidate for
ACC Sophomore of the Year
honors, the league's leading
scorer and the main obstacle to
Virginia's securing its hold on
first place when the Cavs meet
N.C. State tomorrow night.

Big Tree Burleson and
the Wolfpack have played some
impressive games but do not
rank among the ACC elite.
Their latest embarrassment was
a one-point loss to Maryland at
home on Monday night and the
Cavaliers also have a victory
over them, a 84-73 verdict won
at Reynolds Coliseum in early
January.

In that game Long Tommy
pumped in 36 points and
snatched a slew of rebounds
only to be stymied by
excellent play by almost all the
Wahoos and the obvious
inability of some of his
teammates to play Top Ten
style basketball. The State
supporting cast, though, is not
to be laughed off.

Joe Catterky, a guard
recruited from junior college
where he was quite the star, is
a good shooter and ball-handler
who hasn't been playing up to
potential lately. His partner in
the backcourt, 6-6 Rick Holdt,
is a man very proud of his
jumpshot who's been watching
too many bounce off the rim
recently.

Forwards are plentiful in
supply. Alternating at one spot
are Steve Graham and Steve
Nuce, both adequate 6-6ers,
with the other position shared
by the infamous "Turned-On
Twins," Bob Heuts and Paul
Coder. Heuts and Nuce usually
start but any of the four is
capable of a good game and
none is a weak link.

The Cavaliers enter the
game with a tenuous hold on
the top ACC spot. Challenging
are North Carolina, also with
only one ACC loss, and Duke,
Carolina's conqueror and
possessed of only two league
setbacks.

Up front we'll have Jim
Hobgood, for two straight
games the team's hight scorer.
and co-captains Frank DeWitt
and Scott McCandlish. It will
be their job to try to contain
Burleson. If they can do it if
shouldn't be close.
