As the football season
enters into its death throes no
one is happier than John
Markon. The Gastonia, N.C.
wizard is still riding herd on
the CD's panel of experts with
a four game bulge and a mere
two weeks remaining.

Chief challengers to the
canny Carolinian are Hugh
Carter, a persistent
second-placer, and "Dangerous
Doug" Doughty, previously a
danger only to the reputation
of the Progs board but now in
a tie for the runner-up spot.
Ernest Dempsey and Hugh
Antrim pace the stragglers.

Unanimous picks this week
are William & Mary over
Richmond in a key Southern
Conference duel and Clemson
over N.C. State as the Tigers
fight to stay alive in the ACC
race. Only Randy Wert,
resorting to desperation tactics
to improve his low estate, sees
Duke denying North Carolina
that title.

Wake Forest, a team that
knows all about low estates
this season, tangles with South
Carolina in Columbia's
"Cockpit" and Markon,
Doughty, Antrim and "Upset"
Marshall see a Wake win. The
other six retain their right of
dissent.

Southern Mississippi travels
to "Tech Territory" to face the
Hokies and seven
prognosticators back the
Rebels. Markon, Marshall and
Barney Cooke, improving his
record since pensioning off his
U Hall mouthpiece, like the
Turkeys and their superslinger
Don Strock.

In the traditional battle of
academic giants only Markon,
picking upsets like there was
no tomorrow, likes Harvard
over the Homestanding Elis of
Yale.

Ernest Dempsey is a similar
lone wolf in selecting Ohio
State to upset powerful
Michigan and, in another Big
Ten struggle, six CD seers are
joined by Kenny Elzinga (not
listed in your scorecard) in
picking Michigan State over
Northwestern. Wert, Cooke,
Dempsey and Markon, who's
flunking Economics anyway,
take the scholars over the
visiting jocks.

Dempsey, another man
making his move, Antrim and
Wert like Syracuse over West
Virginia in a battle of Lambert
Trophy also-rans and the Board
divides on Notre Dame-LSU.
