Rugby 'A' Side Routs ODU, 33-0

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

Virginia athletics were not
completely shut out this weekend,
as the Rugby "A" side salvaged
some of the University's honor by
crushing Old Dominion University,
33-0, on Nameless Field, Sunday.
The "B", "C", and "Blue" teams
also scored victories, defeating
squads from George Mason and
ODU.

Dave Hopkins broke the ice
early for the Cavaliers, scoring a try
in the first five minutes of play.
Virginia backs controlled the action
for most of the first half and gave
the Hoos a 19-0 lead at
intermission. The last two tries
were set up by good loose scrum
play and fine kick coverage.

Center Ron Pulliam was the
high scorer for the day with three
tries and 12 points, while wing
Buzz Witt contributed two tries and
had eight points. Other Virginia
standouts were Peter Schmidt, who
rounded out the scoring with nine
points on three conversions and a
penalty kick, scrum half Mike
Frakes and prop George McCallum,
each of whom assisted on a try.

The "B" team also had a fine
day, downing the George Mason
"A" team, 24-7. Centers Greg
Thompson and Joe Jennings both
scored a try, while Mark Storm
bedeviled the Shriners with three
conversions and two penalty shots
for 12 points. Scrum half Jim
Bledsoe and prop Gary Ahrens
stifled George Mason's attack with
excellent field play.

The "C" team continued the
Cavalier domination, as it stymied
the Shriner "B" squad, 24-4. In this
contest the Cavaliers were led by
Joe Leads, Mike Colglazier and
second row man Peter Menk.

In the day's final struggle, the
"Blue" side emerged victorious over
the ODU "B" team, which included
several of its "A" siders. Barry
Grimmel was outstanding at his
hooker position, setting up two
Wahoo tallies.

Sunday's victory stretched the
"A" team's winning streak to six
and should strengthen its hold on
the number one ranking in the East.
The ruggers are still unbeaten
against college teams and have
defeated all in-state competition.
