35-0 Triumph Over Williamsburg Indians Led To Ruggers Gaining Top Eastern Ranking

As erratic as the Cavalier offense
has been throughout the season,
one man has stood out as a
consistent performer. The player
referred to here is fourth year wide
receiver Bill Davis whose solid
season play and fine afternoon
against Virginia Tech has earned
him mention as the Cavalier Daily
Player of the Week.

Recognized as number 86 by
Cavalier fans, Davis nabbed six
aerials for 45 yards Saturday last
and now has 36 on the year for 377
yards. At 6′ 4″, 203 pounds, Davis
has the size needed to be effective
at his position in the Atlantic Coast
Conference.

Davis Leads ACC In Receptions, Among Nation's Top 20

Formerly the Virginia High
School Decathlon champion, Bill
came to Virginia from Richmond's
Collegiate High School during the
George Blackburn era. He also
lettered in four sports at Collegiate.
Initially a defensive back, Bill led
the freshman team in interceptions
before being switched to offense in
his second year and has been there
ever since.

Married and the father of a
daughter, Davis is leading the ACC
in receiving on the season and
shows no signs of relinquishing his
grip on first place. This standing
gives him a fine shot at making the
ACC All-Conference team and has
to be considered the Cavalier's best
candidate for the honored team on
statistical basis.

Enrolled in the Education
School, Bill is a Dean's List student
in addition to his gridiron
accomplishments. His receiving
stats place him eleventh on the
single season list in yardage with
377 yards and ninth career yardage
with 681 yards.

Tom Fletcher, Bill's receiver
coach on the Virginia staff,
commented that, "He (Bill) is
having a terrific season. I think that
two things have been the key to his
success this ye continued es Mr.
Fletcher. "First of all, he's settled
down into one position," indicated
the coach, referring to his being
flip flopped among the three
receiver slots. "The other point is
that he just made up his mind that
in his last season he was going to
have a real great year. He did a lot
of work on his patterns this
summer."
