Wahoo Quarterback Larry Albert Tries To Evade VPI Tacklers As Linebacker Craig Critchley Looks On

Albert Completed 14 of 25 Passes Against The Hokies But Paydirt Again Escaped The University Saturday

Old man time just wouldn't
hurry Saturday morning in
Annapolis as the Naval Academy
scored with only 54 seconds left in
the second overtime to nip the
Cavalier booters 1-0.

Record Sinks

Virginia, now 7-4, went to the
banks of the Severn in hopes of
drawing a little national attention
by upending the nationally ranked
Midshipmen and nearly pulled it
off. A large and tough team, Navy
played a very physical game but
could not muscle a score during
regulation to the credit of Cavalier
fullbacks Ed Marks, Chip Williams,
and Phil Russell. First year goalie
Scott Peyton also had a fine day in
the net.

Offensively, the story of the
contest was frustration as the
visitors came close several times.
Forward Jay Connor bit the
crossbar once and had two other
shots nick the frame of the net.

"We made one of our very best
efforts," said Coach Jim Stephens
of his team's play. "It was every bit
as tough to lose as the score
indicates." After regulation play
did not bring a verdict, the game
was sent into an overtime period
which also proved fruitless and led
to the second overtime.

Meet Wolfpack

Preparations are now being
made for Wednesday's trip to
Raleigh to play ACC rival N.C.
State. A win against the Wolfpack is
important to regain the team's
momentum for Saturday's State
Championship contest in
Lynchburg against either
Randolph-Macon or Lynchburg.
The opponent will be announced
pending the outcome of contests
within the state's western division
yet to be completed.

Unbeaten In State

The Cavaliers, 2-3 in the ACC,
are undefeated within the state,
playing in the eastern division and
are gunning for their third straight
state title. Roanoke shared the
crown with the Cavaliers in 1969
while the local booters defeated
William and Mary 2-1 last year to
take sole possession of the honor.

Drills this week will be devoted
to restarting the stalled offense in
an effort to even the squad's league
log.
