Booters Overpower Tigers,
Gain Berth In State Finals

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

The Virginia soccer team
outlasted a scrappy
Hampden-Sydney squad, 3-0,
Tuesday and clinched a berth in the
state finals.

The Cavaliers' victory was
highlighted by a strong
performance from the offense,
which had come to life in the last
two outings against William and
Mary and VPI. As in these contests,
the 'Hoos outshot the opposition
by a large margin, getting off 32
shots to the Tigers' nine.

Hampden-Sydney did not
succumb easily, however. Obviously
inspired by the home crowd, the
doughty Tigers held the Cavaliers
scoreless for the first period of
play. Andy DuPont finally broke
the ice in the second quarter when
he scored on a pass from Jay
Conner.

The score remained 1-0 until
midway through the third stanza
when Steve Kennelly chipped in a
shot after receiving the ball from
teammate Phil Crane. John
Gaughen added a fourth-period
insurance goal with an assist by
Geoff Curme.

By defeating the Tigers, the
Cavaliers wrapped up an undefeated
in-state season, compiling a 6-0
record, and elevated their overall
mark to 7-3. They now move into
the state finals on November 13
against the undetermined Eastern
Division winner. The Wahoos are
the defending champions and
shared the 1969 crown with
Roanoke.

On the ACC side the picture is
not so rosy. Virginia's league record
is a disappointing 1-3 and there
appears to be little chance for a
third straight title.

The Cavaliers travel to
Annapolis this Saturday to take on
a highly ranked Navy squad.
