Harriers Take Fifth Place,
Fall To Terps In Dual Meet

By TOM BELL

The cross-country team finished
fifth in a nine-team meet at College
Park, Maryland, Saturday, but
dropped a dual-meet to Maryland in
the process.

Phil Meyer, despite an injury,
continued to lead the Cavalier
runners, who have but one victory
in the conference. Meyer crossed
the line in 28:10 for the five miles,
40 seconds off his best place.

Donal Day and Jim Wood
finished second and third among
the Cavaliers, as both pleased coach
Lou Onesty with what he termed
one of their best performances of
the season.

Gerry Hart and Mike Littig
followed the first three Cavaliers.

Mr. Onesty said there was some
"real good competition," in the
meet, but expressed
disappointment in the performance
of his team. "I didn't think we ran
our best. It was probably our worst
performance of the season."

Navy Tops

Navy won the meet, as their top
runner, Bob Kramer, crossed the
finish line in 26:10 for top honors.
Georgetown finished second to the
Midshipmen, followed by
Maryland, American University and
the Cavaliers.

In the dual meet against
Maryland, which was run within
the larger competition, the Turtles
won 15-49 with an almost perfect
score.

Stragglers

Brew Barron, Mike Decamps,
Greg Lane also ran for the
Cavaliers, but finished far back.

The squad travels to
Bridgewater on Friday for the state
meet, a tune-up for the ACC
championship next Monday at
North Carolina State in Raleigh.

Mr. Onesty hopes for a second
or third place performance in the
state meet. Meyer may not run,
however, in order to be ready for
the conference event.

William and Mary will be the
clear-cut favorite to win the state
meet.
