Safety Gerard Mullins Returns Punt In Earlier Game Against Duke

Second-Yearman Had Three Long Returns To Help Cavaliers To Early Lead Over West Point

Pushing itself farther and
farther away from a third straight
ACC crown, the Cavalier booters
dropped their second straight
league game and third overall, to
Duke, 2-1, Friday afternoon at
Durham.

The Blue Devils, hot in pursuit
of their best record ever after last
season's 8-3 mark, hiked their
won-lost margin to a spectacular
7-0 and 2-0 in the conference. In
the meantime, Virginia lost its
third conference game against only
one victory. The Cavaliers had
previously romped over three
non-league opponents.

Taking a 1-0 halftime lead on a
second-quarter score, the Iron
Dukes added a final-period goal to
post a 2-0 lead before the
University even got on the
scoreboard. It was only late in the
fourth quarter that the Cavaliers
Sam Crosby put the team back
into contention but the failing
Virginia offense could not push
across another score to tie the
game.

Victors over pesky N.C. State
earlier in the week, the Blue Devils
avenged last year's setback at the
hands of the Cavaliers, by the
same score.

Leading Duke into the fray was
sophomore Pato Gutierrez, who
had booted home a phenomenal
16 goals in only 6 contests. The
University managed to keep
Gutierrez off the scoreboard but
the flashy Santiago, Chile native
assisted on each Blue Devil score,
during the afternoon.

Highlighted by a rigorous
defensive battle, the game was
contested in the center of the field
most of the day and neither team
was able to propel more than ten
shots on goal. First-year Cavalier
goalie Scott Peyton registered
several key saves but spent most of
the afternoon watching the action
further upfield.

With only one remaining ACC
game remaining, that being against
N.C. State in about two weeks,
conference title hopes remain for
only the mathematician.

The Cavaliers pursue a third
straight state crown, Wednesday,
in a home game with William and
Mary.
