Booters Top ODU;
Face VMI Today

The Cavalier soccer team,
defending ACC and state champs,
rolled to its second impressive win
of the season Friday when they
topped Old Dominion, 11-0, in a
driving rain on Carr's Hill Field.

John Gaughen scored 4 goals to
pace the Cavalier attack followed
by Phil Crane who had two scores
for the second game in a row.

The Monarchs got only three
shots on goal all day, giving
first-yearman Scott Peyton, the
Virginia goalie, his first collegiate
shutout. Peyton had to make only
one save.

The Cavaliers have now scored
16 goals in two games against state
opponents, and face their third
state team. VMI, this afternoon at 3
on Carr's Hill Field.

The Cavaliers scored in all four
periods, with five goals coming in
the second period to give them a
7-0 halftime advantage and put the
game out of reach for the
outclassed Monarchs. Two goals in
each of the last two periods
completed the rout.

Andy Dupont, Fred McGlynn,
Steve Kennelly, Kim Russell added
assists to the Cavalier effort.

This afternoon's game against
the Keydets will be the last for the
Cavaliers before they move into
ACC play Sunday when they host
Clemson. Soccer is a club sport at
VMI, and the Cavs should be a clear
favorite.

Cavalier coach Jim Stephens
commented after the game that his
squad has more scoring punch than
any other Virginia squad in recent
history. The eleven goals scored
against the Monarchs are believed
to be a single game scoring record
for the team.
