To the surprise of almost
everyone concerned the initial week
of Pigskin Picks ended with dark
horse Doug Doughty in a clear lead.
Trailing the second-year seer is a
pack of nine also-rans, united only
in their dedication to vengeance.

The expert panel finds itself in
total agreement on the
Duke-Stanford and State-Carolina
games. The vote is 10-0 for the Tar
Heels, and against the Blue Devils.

Continuing in the conference,
only Cavalier SID Barney Cooke
saw Maryland as being capable of
upsetting Wake Forest in College
Park. However, even ABC, who
may be hiding inside information
on the Wake game, could find no
plausible reason to select Clemson
over Georgia Tech.

In a Saturday night affair South
Carolina travels to Memphis State,
with experts backing the
Gamecocks. Anti-Cock sentiments
were expressed by Bill Nachman, a
sleeping giant in the second
division, and Doughty, who's
opinion immediately dropped the
point spread three big ones.

The upset-minded Nachman and
the immensely pragmatic Randy
Wert find themselves soul mates on
the Florida State-Tech and
VMI-Furman encounters. Except
for these two lone wolves the panel
votes solidly for the Seminoles and
Keydets.

In the legendary feud between
Monongahela River rivals Pittsburgh
and West Virginia. John Markon
and Davis Marshall, two
powerhouses yet to make their
presence felt, join Wert and Cooke
in the Panther's corner.

Rebel flags aplenty will fly in
Birmingham tomorrow night when
Alabama hosts Ole Miss. Only
Doughty, obviously flushed with
success, sees the visitors as winning.
The other nine seem to be of the
mind that nothing short of say.
Steve Jones driving the team bus.
will stop the Tide from rolling.
