Wake Forest Triumphs
In ACC Golf Tourney

Following up a 2-stroke per
margin which it had gained in the
earlier rounds, Wake Forest
captured the ACC Golf
Tournament, Tuesday, at
Woodmont Club in Rockville,
Maryland. The first two rounds had
been played last month at Aiken,
South Carolina.

The Demon Deacons totaled
1,468 strokes for the event, soundly
defeating second-place Maryland,
which managed 1492 strokes.
Virginia struggled to a seventh-place
finish, edging hapless N.C. State by
a 1570 to 1591 margin. In the
middle of the standings were UNC.
Duke, South Carolina and Clemson,
in that order.

Individual champion was North
Carolina's Marty West. The 22-year
old Maryland native triumphed over
such names as Wake Forest's Lanny
Wadkins (U.S. Amateur Champion)
and Eddie Pearce (North-South
Amateur Champion). West, in
eighth position after the Aiken
play, solved the tricky 7100-yard
Rockville layout and fired 73-70
for the final rounds, for a score of
287.

Right behind West came a string
of Wake Forest stars. Wadkins
stroked to the runner-up spot in the
tourney, with a total of 292. A
stroke back followed Pearce. Mike
Kallam and Tom Case, all from
Wake Forest.

Virginia, if it did anything else,
did show a measure of consistency
in its lowly finish. Brit Stenson
paced the Cavaliers with a total of
310. King Ohmic scored 314. Phil
Crane and Bob Dunn summed 315
and Rick Miller ended play with a
316.

Each squad entered seven
golfers, of which the top five
scorers counted. Other contestants
for Virginia included Mike Mozur
and Ben Gray, who replaced Tom
MacPherson for the trip up north.

Both Stenson and Crane
experienced high points in the
tourney, but then misfortune
struck. Stenson's 143 after the first
two days placed him among the
leaders but an 89. Monday, drove
him from that position. Crane's
creditable 78 on the same day
thrust him into the team lead, but a
final-day 84 lost him ground.
