Batters Meet VPI,
Catcher Top Slugger

The high-flying Cavalier baseball
team, riding a three-game winning
streak and sitting only a half-game
from the ACC lead, hosts a
hard-hitting Virginia Tech team in a
non-conference game this afternoon
at Lambeth Field.

The Gobblers have hit over .300
as a team this season, collecting 201
hits in 600 at bats, and could pose a
problem for the Cavalier pitching
staff.

Catcher John Van Arnhem leads
the Hokies at the plate with an
amazing .533 average. He led the
nation in hitting in the last NCAA
statistics, and has also had five
homers, 27 RBI, and 62 total bases
on the season, all of which have
broken old Tech marks.

Gobblers, 12-8

The Hokies have run up a 12-8
record for the season, including a
2-1 record in the Big Five. Their
only Big Five loss was to William
and Mary, by a 4-3 score in extra
innings. The Cavaliers are also 2-1,
having also lost to W&M 4-3 in
extra innings.

Hot Hokies

Vince Carbaugh at, .345 and Jay
Fleischer at .311 are the other top
regulars for the Hokies.

The Gobbler starter was
unknown as of yesterday, but is
expected to be a left-hander.

ACC Games

The game is the final
non-conference contest of the
season for the Cavaliers, before
they start on a final stretch of eight
ACC games in 13 days.

Average Up

The Cavaliers have raised their
team batting average in the last
week to .253, while their ERA as a
squad has slipped to 2.07.

Game time for today's game,
which could assure the Cavaliers
second place in the Big Five race, is
2:30 p.m.
