Penn Nips Malletmen

In their first game of the season
the University polo team had their
invincibility shaken slightly shaken
by an 8-6 loss to the University of
Pennsylvania team.

This coming Sunday Virginia
will host a team from Middleburg
on lower Lambeth field at 2:30 pm.

In the first period of last
Sunday's game the Quaker team of
Doug Anzac. Will McCormick and
Bill O'Connor displayed the fast
riding and long shots that enabled
them to hold a lead throughout the
game. Dave Banks and new varsity
players Jake Kenworthy and Mark
Pirrung played a determined
defense for Virginia and only
allowed one Penn goal in the initial
stanza.

McCormick scored for Penn in
the second period but his first
minute goal was quickly countered
by a Cavalier score by Pirrung. Penn
then was able to regain the attack
and score two more times. Virginia
team captain Banks later fired a
backhander over to Pirrung who
shot the ball through the uprights
in the last minute of the period.

Penn tallied three times in the
third period and grabbed an 8-2
lead before Virginia hit its stride in
the fourth session. Reed Graham
and Banks both starred on defense
