Batmen Log 11-1 Record
Duke, Wake Forest Fall

The Cavalier baseball team
continued its successful start over
Spring Break, as the team emerged
from six games with only one loss,
to run its season's record to 11-1.

Two important ACC wins were
included in the holiday play, as the
Cavaliers topped Duke and Wake
Forest in chalking up wins on the
road. The only loss was to William
and Mary in another away contest.

First-year man Steve Sroba has
continued to lead the Cavaliers at
the plate, currently sporting a .382
average, almost one hundred points
better than second place hitter
John Williams at .286.

Captain Ed Kihm, and second
year-man Mike Judkins and Steve
Brindle have led the pitching corps,
which has been the strong point for
the Cavaliers with a combined
earned run average of 1.81. Brindle
is 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA, while Kihn
is 2-0 with a 0.30 ERA. Judkins has
picked up three wins, all in relief,
and has not given up an earned run
in eight innings pitched.

The Cavaliers started their
vacation schedule by pounding out
13 hits to top Old Dominion 9-6.
Judkins relieved Hunter Hollar to
pick up his third win of the season.

Next came the loss to William
and Mary in a close 4-3 contest.
Kihm was the Cavalier starter, but
was lifted in favor of reliever Dave
LaCrosse who picked up the loss.
The Cavaliers could manage only
five hits for the whole game.

Back at Lambeth Field, the
Cavaliers won two easy victories
over northern invaders. Syracuse
gave up 12 runs on ten hits and was
held to three hits by Rick Spigone
who went all the way for his only
decision of the season, a 12-1 win.
Ashland College from Ohio was the
other victim in the home stand as
they went down 10-4 as Brindle
picked up the win with a save from
Brian Hilburn in relief.

The swing into North Carolina
for the first games of the season in
the ACC left the Cavaliers tied with
defending champion Maryland for
the conference lead.

Ed Kihm pitched his second
complete game and second shutout
of the season as he held Duke to
two hits and walked away with a
3-0 win.

Brindle wet all the way, also for
the second time to get the win over
Wake Forest, as he held the
Deacons to three hits. The Cavaliers
had four runs on eight hits to come
away with a close 4-3 win.

The Cavaliers now have a layoff
until Friday when they travel to the
University of Richmond in the first
of three Easters Weekend contests.
Pembroke State will be at Lambeth
Field on Saturday, with N.C. State
coming in for an important ACC
game on Sunday.
