"Pistol" Parkhill Led All Vote Getters On All-Tournament Team

6′ 3″ Backcourt Star Nimbly Netted 44 Points In Two Outings

McGuire's Gamecocks took
home most of the bacon but
Cavalier supersoph Barry Parkhill
nabbed a pound or two for himself
by garnering more votes than
anyone else on the ACC
All-Tournament team.

Chosen on all but five of the 62
ballots cast by members of thy
Atlantic Coast Sports Writers
Association, Parkhill led an array of
acknowledged court stars on the
first team which also included John
Roche and Tom Owens of
champion South Carolina, UNC's
Lee Dedmon, and Paul Coder of
North Carolina State.

Parkhill, a State College, Pa.
native, modestly said that he was
"pretty surprised" and "pretty
happy." Said Barry, "I really didn't
think about it that much" which
was evident as he calmly dropped in
18 and 26 points against Wake
Forest and North Carolina
respectively to average 22 for the
tourney. It was his jumper with
seconds remaining in Thursday
night's Wake contest which
brought the Cavaliers from a one
point deficit.

Freshman basketball coach Dick
DiBiaso, in the absence of Coach
Gibson, who has already hit the
recruiting trail, had this to say
about Parkhill's selection.
"Considering the wealth of talent
found at the ACC tournament.
Barry's achievement is quite an
honor. He has earned a great deal of
respect for his play there."

Chosen last week as a member
of the second All-ACC team,
Parkhill strongly impressed the
strong bloc of North Carolina
writers which virtually control the
balloting. Commenting on the
tournament itself. Barry indicated
that "it was more exciting than I
thought it would be. To me it was
just about the coolest thing in the
world. It was just great." The last
time a Cavalier performer was
elected to a first team All-Tourney
berth was in 1959.

Also named for the tourney
second team were Al Heartley of
N.C. State, George Karl and Bill
Chamberlain of UNC. Tom Riker of
South Carolina and Wake Forest's
Charlie Davis. The voting is done
with a point system which gives
two votes for a first team mention
and one vote for second team spots.
Owens received the second highest
total at 112 while Dedmon had 111
with Roche and Coder polling 86
and 72 respectively. Second squad
point totals were Heartley 69, Karl
62, Riker 55, Chamberlain 54, and
Davis 53.
