OxRidge Arena, Darien, Conn.
— The Virginia polo squad defeated
the University of Connecticut
yesterday afternoon in a close
match, 13-12, to advance to the
finals of the Indoor Polo
Intercollegiates. Tomorrow night at
8 they will take on Yale for the
championship.

In the semi-final match with the
University of Connecticut,
first-year man Reed Graham scored
seven goals with David Banks and
Ray Norden scoring 3 and 2 goals,
respectively. There was one pony
goal for the Virginia team.

Frank Vita led the Connecticut
squad with 9 goals. Number one
man Duncan Peters had three goals
for the Connecticut team.

Virginia led, 6-5, after the first
two periods of play but
Connecticut came back in the final
period to recapture the lead, 12-10,
with only two minutes of play left.
But the University team did some
quick scoring in those final two
minutes, putting in three goals, to
win a narrow victory. Yale is the
favorite in tomorrow's match.

Out Of Intercollegiates

Virginia was put out of the
Intercollegiates in the quarterfinals
last year by UConn in a contested
match. Returning players
complained that UConn paired up
the ponies unevenly in last year's
match and the Virginians were left
with the short end of the stick.
Since the club cannot trailer its
ponies up to Connecticut, it has
been the custom for the squad to
play on opponents' ponies.

Virginia captain Dave Banks
issued a formal complaint to
Intercollegiate officials last year
and again this winter in hopes that
Intercollegiate matches could be
played on mounts new to both
teams.

The trio spent last weekend in
Darien getting in shape for
Thursday's match. Winter is
Virginia polo's off season and the
squad has traditionally been very
rusty going into the collegiates.
