Sunday's sun and wind saw
Virginia's defending national
champion lacrosse team blitz
an outclassed Bowie Lacrosse
Club 19-3 in the squad's first
contest with outside
competition this year.

Mid-fielder Pete Eldredge
led the blistering Cavalier
offense, which chalked up an
amazing 67 shots on goal, with
seven scores. First year
mid-fielder Doug Cooper and
attackman Rich Beach both
tallied three goals with Jimmy
Ulman scoring twice and
assisting twice. Star attackman
Jay Conner scored once and had
three assists while Tom Duguette,
Bob Prout, and Beach also assisted.

11-2 Halftime Margin

Tiring the older Bowie players
with a fast paced running game, the
Cavaliers used sharper passing and
good defense to run up an 11-2
halftime bulge. Frustrated Bowie
players committed several fouls and
allowed the home team to score
several goals in extra man
situations.

Coach Glenn Thiel could only
comment, "They weren't too
strong a little old and a little out of
shape." The Cavaliers' swarming
and scrambling defense gave Bowie
only 15 shots on goal with goalie Al
Hirsch collecting four of the six
saves. Theil praised Eldredge as
having "the best game" and also
indicated that Cooper and Ulman
were two other bright spots.

Far from satisfied with his
squad's performance in view of the
title to be defended. Thiel said, "As
a team we didn't look very good on
ground balls particularly, which is
what we must do against Mt.
Washington. That's their real
strength - being able to get the ball
off the ground and to control the
tempo of the game."

Mt. Washington Next

Virginia travels to Mt.
Washington this Saturday to avenge
last year's defeat. The Mt.
Washington Club, composed of an
array of former All Americans and
serious Lacrosse players crushed
Washington and Lee 27-4 this
weekend in its tuneup.
