Grapplers Host ACC Tourney

By Tom Bell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The Cavalier lineup that is
now entering final preparations
for this weekend's ACC
tournament in Memorial Gym
is the end result of a season of
shifting lineups, in which the
Cavaliers have never used the
same complete lineup twice.

Jack Johndrow will lead things
off for the Cavaliers in the
118-pound class. The third-year
man has had an excellent season
with a 9-1 dunk meet record, losing
only to Duke's undefeated Dan
Staverowsky, a loss he will
probably get a chance to revenge
this weekend.

Overtime Loss

John Pitas, a third-year man,
follows Johndrow at 126. He also
has a 9-1 dual meet record and is
undefeated at 2-0 in the
conference. Pitas was runner up in
the tournament last year, losing an
overtime, 1-0, decision in the finals,
and should be the favorite this year.

Third-year man Lou Pavia holds
down the 134-pound spot and
should be top seeded with a 4-0
record in the ACC, including two
pins and two lopsided victories. A
backup last season, Pavia has been a
starter most of this year with a 9-3
overall record. He also won the
state title.

Outstanding Career

Co-captain John Pegues will cap
a long outstanding career with his
tournament performance. He has
won the ACC the last two years and
has an undefeated 14-0-2 record
including a state championship this
season.

Shelley Zablow, last year's ACC
134-pound champ, will wrestle at
150, and has a perfect 2-0 record
since returning to action after
semester break. He should be top
seeded in his class, and a definite
threat.

Denis Bittenbender, a 158-pounder,
is the only first-year man
on the team. He is 2-1 in the
conference, including a pin against
North Carolina, and 8-6 on the
season.

Jay Douglas has come back from
early season injuries to take the 167
spot for the Cavaliers. The
fourth-year man scored a pin in his
only conference match against
Duke, and has a 2-3 dual meet
record.

Ted Moore will finish his second
year as co-captain in the
